Back to basics: Part 3
By now you should have 1) cleaned out your closet except for the items you just love and are vintage or vintage inspired, 2) checked off any basics you already had off the list, 3) boned up on the basic vintage silhouettes, so now it is time for step 4) Finding the rest of your basics and adding in color!
As I mentioned in Part 2, it is fairly simple to find basic vintage or classic style clothing at all price points. So what I did was found a few black basics, and then added in a color- pink- so you can see some different items and where they came from:
In this collection we have items from Target, Modcloth, Old Navy, H & M, Kohls, and Amazon! And the grand total for everything in this collection is just over $300! Isn't that amazing!
Once you have the basics, everything else you buy should coordinate with something from the foundation of your wardrobe. For example, if you buy a vintage 1940s cotton dress, it would look adorable with the black flats and the stud earrings. If you find a 1950s beaded cardigan, it would be perfect with the dress, the skirt, and possibly the pants. As you can see, the original basic check list is a wonderful jumping off point for the rest of your wardrobe.
If you are really organized, you can take a picture of each item you own with your smart phone and then when you are out shopping, you can just scroll through your wardrobe so you will know if the top you are dying to get actually goes with any of your bottoms. That way you don't waste money on a garment you will never wear because you have nothing to go with it.

These are really cute outfits. Unfortunately, my belly doesn't look good in pencil skirts. I do like the Chinese Mary Janes though.
ReplyDeleteSo I just found your blog yesterday and Ive been loving it! All great tips, Ive been working on my vintage inspired wadrobe and I love the sillioute examples, they really helped. Before I'd just been kind of working on the "well it looks vintage" mentality. Not always that effective.

I just looked at that black dress at Target today!!! It's on clearance for $14.98 by my house.... With your stamp of approval, I should go back and grab it in my new size. ;) I did pick up those little commuter ballet flats today, in blue and black. I was thinking yesterday that I needed a comfy soft shoe for around the house. These work great for style and comfort doing house chores.

ReplyDeleteMistress: Yes, my belly sticks out too, but I just pretend I am Marilyn Monroe! LOL! You can always wear fuller skirts instead of pencil skirts as well.
